Lauren | Colorado Springs Senior Photographer

Lauren is the daughter of one of the girls in our neighborhood bunco group. Her mom, Sherry, is a riot so I’ve loved getting to know her daughter better. Lauren is the sweetest girl ever! Such a good kid. I hope my girls are as nice as Lauren when they’re teenagers. She just started her senior year, so we had a great time playing under cover from the rain at the Flying Horse Club. It started pouring as soon as we got started! We had big plans to go to the Santa Fe trail after, but that’s going to have to wait until this weekend since everything was a soggy mess. Thankfully, there are some beautiful arches and stonework at the club so we still had a great shoot there. She is GORGEOUS, so I wasn’t about to let the weather ruin it for us! I can’t wait to shoot Lauren in a more nature-y setting this weekend since that is more *her*.

My babies are fwee!

So, um, I started this post weeks ago, saved it as a draft, and forgot about it. Oops!!

My twins turned 3 on the 5th. Sniff!  Because of Pinterest, I did more work on this party than I ever have on a party. I learned so much about the design end of Photoshop. I will be back with a more detailed post about their birthday party with pictures taken by my fabulously talented photographer friend, Kim. First, though, I attempted two different shoots with my kids to try and get ONE decent picture. Yeah, that didn’t happen. This was the best I got. We went outside the next day and played around on our front steps, and I got some beauties of each of them then. No good ones of all three, though, so those will be separate posts because this one would be way too long otherwise!

Twins’ First Day of Preschool

I decided to do the same thing I did with Abby’s first day of school photo for my twins. I shot Cora’s in the morning before we left since I knew she’d play with me, but I waited until after school to do Emma’s. I’m so glad I did because she actually cooperated! I got one good shot of her looking at me AND smiling. Sort of. She even went and sat on the rock that will now forever be our first day of school spot. Open-mouthed smile

Preschool has been a pretty difficult transition for Emma. Cora too, but not as bad as Emma. As I’ve mentioned before, Emma’s autistic, so she doesn’t handle transitions well at all. She loves the playtime portion when she can do her own thing, but sitting down and listening? She just doesn’t get it. All she knows is she wants to keep playing, but these strange women she doesn’t know won’t let her, so there have been lots of screams. I know it’ll get better, but it’s so hard to leave her screaming. And to come back and she’s screaming again. Yesterday, they’re third day in, the teacher said she did fabulous up until the very end, so hopefully it will get a little easier sooner than I think it will.

Cora tells me every morning that she doesn’t want to go to school. She’s very shy with strangers, and slow to warm up, so it’s going to take some time for her to settle in to preschool too. When I pick them up and ask her what they did that day, she always tells me she read a book, so story time is definitely the favorite for her. They have a folder that comes home in their backpack with paperwork. When they get to class, they take it out and put it on a table for the teachers to deal with. Cora calls it her library book. She cracks me up! Every day, she makes sure her *library book* is in her backpack before we leave the house. She also doesn’t like music time, but I think that’s because she feels a little on display. I did catch her at home quietly singing and doing the moves to the three songs to which they sing & dance, though, so it can’t be *that* bad. Winking smile

First Day of First Grade

Today was Abby, my oldest's first day of first grade. This one has hit me especially hard because this is the first year she has a desk and structure. It's not primarily play-based learning any more, but real Big Kid time. Sniff!

I saw a few variations on Pinterest and knew I had to do something similar. Most had their kid holding a sign of some sort with first day info, but my favorite was this one where they wrote some of the kids' favorites on the picture as well. I didn't get that far with it tonight, but I did at least get the pertinent stuff on there. It'll be so fun to look back on this in future years! It'll be fun to do the same thing with my twins next week when they start preschool. But I can't think of that right now or I'll start sobbing. My babies!

Abby's First Day

Josie's Birthday Party

For Josie's second birthday, her parents decided to throw a "driveway party." They cleaned out their garage, set some delicious food on a table, and asked everyone to bring their own (alcoholic) drinks and lawn chairs. It was such a great (and relaxed!) time, we decided to do the same thing for the twins' birthday in a couple weeks. I'm horrible about taking pictures of my own kids, so I took the opportunity to bring my camera and just shoot for the fun of it. I've missed that!

Isn't he the cutest little boy? Those eyes! He makes me wish we had a boy.

The J Family -- Colorado Springs Natural Light Family Photographer

Remember Josie? She's growing up so quickly! She just celebrated her 2nd birthday a couple weeks ago, so I got to play with her again. Like most of us, her parents don't have many pictures with all of them together so we did a whole family session this time. We weren't able to shoot long before a storm hit, but we still had a great time. Later, I'll post a few pictures from her ice cream-themed birthday party. It gave me some great ideas for my own twins' 3rd birthday party coming up in just a few weeks.

Maggie -- Colorado Springs Senior Photographer

You may recognize Maggie from the family/maternity session a few posts back. She is GORGEOUS and a complete joy to work with! We had so much fun just the two of us on her senior shoot. She loves nature, and worked at a nursery last summer, so we were very excited to head over to Red Rock Canyon Open Space for her shoot. I hope my girls are as nice and friendly as Maggie when they become teenagers!

Hello Again

I've been a horrible, horrible blogger, but I do have a good excuse. I've been busy. Ok, you deserve the long answer. This past year has been a tough one for my family. Emma, the "younger" twin, is most likely autistic, so it's been a year full of tests, doctors, assessments, specialists, and therapy. Since January, we've been through a 2-hour developmental evaluation, an ABR, a neurologist, a school district screening and an evaluation, an EEG, a screaming eye exam, and weekly speech and occupational therapy. I'm sure there's even more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

In the developmental evaluation, we met with a developmental pediatrician, an occupational therapist, and a speech therapist. They each took turns playing with Emma and asking me a million questions to determine whether or not she's autistic. The answer: we don't know. At the time, she was 30 months old (to the day), and she tested as 11 months for verbal language, 12 months for receptive, and 20 months for fine motor. Since she was only 2.5, they were hesitant to officially diagnose her as autistic, but all signs point to yes. She started therapy shortly after (end of February), and has been doing really well! They will reassess her at 3, and that's when we'll get the diagnosis.

Before they would do the evaluation, she had a standard hearing test which she failed. The next step was the ABR (don't ask me what it stands for because I've blocked it out). This test required sedation (eep!), but she passed with flying colors so that was a relief. She also passed the eye exam a couple weeks ago, so no glasses. Phew!

During the evaluation, the developmental pediatrician noticed Emma tends to space out, so there's a fear that she might be having small seizures. She referred us to a neurologist, who recommended the EEG. She had to be sleep-deprived and sedated, so it was a tough, tough day! The EEG was last Thursday, so we still haven't received the results. Hopefully tomorrow.

They also recommended she start preschool with Cora in the fall, and take advantage of the services offered through our school district. The school district did an initial screening to see if she even needed the evaluation to determine if she qualifies for the program. They decided pretty quickly that she did, in fact, need the eval (duh) so that was held Friday. We met with a couple speech pathologists (one of whom specialized in autism and was FANTASTIC with Emma!), an occupational therapist, a psychologist, a nurse, an audiologist, the district coordinator, and a special needs preschool teacher. She did qualify for the program, so she'll hopefully be going to the same school as her twin, Cora, and older sister, Abby. *fingers crossed*

On top of ALL this, I had cancer two years ago. Last Monday, I had my mammogram and chest x-ray. Everything was clear! Last week was probably the most stressful and emotionally gut-wrenching I've experienced since we went through the tests and surgery for cancer 2 years ago. I'm so, so glad that week is behind us!

I have several sessions to post here, and I'll hopefully get to them very soon now that there's a little break in all of this. I feel awful I haven't kept up!

Avery Ann -- Colorado Springs Newborn Photographer

Ok, seriously? Have you seen a more adorable newborn? Little Avery is such a doll! Her little expression while sleeping kills me in this shot! She was one week old here, and she almost makes me want to have another one. Ok, maybe not, but I loved getting my baby fix. I got to spend lots of time holding her and snuggling her. Swoon!

G Family

A couple weeks ago, I posted a quick sneak peek from Angela's maternity session. We also did a ton of famiy shots, so I had a record number of images to go through. I had such a difficult time narrowing it down for editing! Here are some of my favorites from that day.

I got to play with their newborn, Avery Ann, just yesterday, so I can't wait to show you a few of that sweet baby very soon!

Session Info Card–Colorado Springs Photographer

Once upon a time, Robyn at Paperie Boutique had a “buy the store” sale over at her template store, Fit to Print. I’ve admired her marketing materials for years, so I was gleefully took advantage of this! I finally got around to playing with a few of the pieces recently, and created a session info card to add to my welcome packet. This was something I’ve been wanting to have for a long time, but didn’t really know where to start. Before I had the card, I’d include a very wordy letter with the same information, but I always worried key points got overlooked since it was pretty long. The Fit to Print templates helped me take that letter and break it down into easier to digest sections. My card is a combination of Design One, and the now retired Design Three. I printed them through ProDPI. I love that ProDPI moved to Denver not too long ago! Turn-around time for my orders has been crazy fast now that they’re just an hour away. Clients have been so impressed that I’ve been able to deliver their print orders within a couple days since I receive them from the lab so quickly! Open-mouthed smile

Angela -- Colorado Springs Maternity Photographer

I had the pleasure of shooting Angela's maternity session in her gorgeous home in Cascade. We were pretty concerned about the weather because it was really cloudy and cool all morning long, but cleared up beautifully for us once we started. We had so much fun, I think I shot a record number of images for me on this session. More to come soon. :)

We'd planned to meet again this afternoon for their ordering consultation, but this baby had other plans. She is being born TODAY! Congratulations to Ryan and Angela! I can't wait to meet your new baby girl!

Album -- Colorado Springs Family Photography

I love the way Vanessa's album turned out! She ordered a 10x10 photo book with a black leather cover. It also has hinged pages, so it lays nicely when looking through it. Wanna see it? :) These are just a few of my favorite spreads.
